Pres. Noynoy Aquino appointed Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno as the new Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
In statement released by Presidential Spokesperson, Edwin Lacierda, In the midst of this period of deep mourning
for the loss of Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo,
the President is cognizant of his constitutional duty to appoint the
next Chief Justice of the Philippines. He has therefore decided to
appoint Associate Justice Maria Lourdes Punzalan Aranal-Sereno as the 24th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
Justice Sereno is 51 years old, the first female Chief Justice of the Philippines. In 1984, she graduated valedictorian from the University of the Philippines College of Law. She worked in the biggest law firm in the country.
For 20 years. she also became a professor in U.P. College of Law. After receiving the De Witte Fellowship and a Ford-Rockefeller Scholarship, she pursue her Masters Degree of Law at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
She became Justice of the Supreme court back in August 2010. She might be one of the longest serving Chief Justice, the mandatory retirement is 70 years old. She has 20 more years to hold one of the highest position in the government.
