Yao Ming retires from basketball

Yao Ming decided to retire from basketball due to several injuries to his foot.

It was a frustrating period and many thoughts crossed my mind. Today I would like to announce my personal decision to formally retire as a basketball player," "Nine years ago I came to Houston as a young, tall, skinny player and the entire city and team changed me into a grown man, not only a basketball player." Ming said

He was the first round pick in the 2002 NBA draft, and the first known Chinese basketball player. Houston Rockets drafted Ming after playing from Shanghai Sharks, the team he first played on in China and now he own the team

NBA commissioner David Stern said "Since entering the league as the number one pick in the 2002 draft, Yao Ming has been a transformational player and a testament to the globalisation of our game,"

After playing for 9 years with Houston Rockets, the 7 ft 6 inc Chinese player, became one of the most successful sportsman, he gain endorsement from Nike, Pepsi and Chinese telecommunication company.
